A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulates the auditory nerve, enabling patients with severe or profound hearing loss to perceive sound. RRSH performed three cochlear implants in 2025–26 — the first ever in Maharashtra's Public Health Department system — making this service available at public cost for the first time. The device consists of an external sound processor worn behind the ear and an internal implant placed in surgery.
Adults and children with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears who receive minimal benefit from conventional hearing aids. Children benefit most when implanted early (before age 3.5 years). Adults with post-lingual hearing loss are also strong candidates.
Evaluation begins with audiometry, speech therapy assessment, CT/MRI of the inner ear, and a team review. The implant surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes 2–3 hours. Device 'switch-on' (activation) occurs 4–6 weeks post-surgery, followed by ongoing auditory rehabilitation.
Cochlear implantation covered under MJPJAY neurosurgery packages.
