RRSH established Maharashtra's first kidney transplant unit in the public health sector in 2018. A kidney transplant is the most effective long-term treatment for end-stage kidney failure — replacing the non-functioning kidney with a healthy kidney from a compatible living or deceased donor. The hospital is fully registered with ZTCC (Zonal Transplant Co-ordination Centre) and NOTTO for both living-donor and deceased-donor transplants. 19 transplants were performed in 2025–26 alone.
Patients with end-stage kidney disease on dialysis who are medically suitable for transplant, and who have an identified compatible living donor or are on the deceased-donor waiting list.
Transplant evaluation involves extensive medical, surgical, immunological, and psychosocial assessment — typically spread over multiple visits. After transplant, patients require lifelong immunosuppressant medication and regular follow-up at the nephrology OPD.
Evaluation begins with a referral from the treating nephrologist. Blood group, tissue typing, and comprehensive fitness testing are arranged. For living-donor transplant, the donor also undergoes independent medical evaluation.
Kidney transplant is covered under MJPJAY Scheme Code M8/S9. Eligible patients receive the procedure at no cost.
