Mammography is a specialised low-dose X-ray technique that produces detailed images of breast tissue, used for early detection of breast cancer and evaluation of breast lumps or changes. The service is available at RRSH for women presenting with breast symptoms or referred for screening.
Women with a breast lump, nipple discharge, skin changes on the breast, or a family history of breast cancer. Also for women over 40 referred for routine screening.
Each breast is gently compressed between two plates of the machine while images are taken. There may be mild discomfort during compression, lasting only a few seconds per image. The full test takes about 15–20 minutes.
Do not use deodorant, talcum powder, or body lotion on the day of the test as these can interfere with the images. Wear a top and skirt or trousers rather than a dress — you will need to undress from the waist up.
This service is available at no cost to all eligible patients under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY). Patients from all five Amravati division districts are eligible.
