About this service

Sonography (ultrasound) uses sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs, blood vessels, and soft tissues without any radiation. RRSH performed 13,585 sonography examinations in 2025–26. The service covers abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, thyroid, breast, and vascular ultrasound.

Who needs this service

Patients with abdominal pain, suspected kidney stones, liver or gall bladder disease, pelvic conditions, pregnancy monitoring, or thyroid/breast lumps requiring evaluation.

What to expect

The sonographer applies a water-based gel to your skin and moves a handheld probe over the area. The procedure is painless and takes 15–30 minutes depending on the type of scan.

How to prepare
📋

For abdominal sonography: fast for 6 hours (no food or water except small sips for medications). For pelvic sonography: drink 1 litre of water 1 hour before the scan and do not urinate — a full bladder is required for clear imaging.
